Deadlifts with Kelvin

From time to time people like to come down for a holiday to Cornwall a great chance to get away from the stresses of life, countryside, beaches, rain haha, but as a lifter you have to keep lifting, its what we do. Kelvin reached out to me on social media asking if we could set up a session. Owning a gym one of the big benefits is being able to train with a wide range of people so we setup a deadlift session.

In the past 6 weeks i have not gone past 200kg mainly due to my ankle injury. My best has been 200kg x 8 deficit stiff leg deadlift. Kelvin is following somewhat a 5/3/1 approach so this week his program called for 5 reps at 70% and 5 reps at 80%, i decided i would see if i could follow him, he is looking to pull 300kg in competition soon and ever since i lifted 300kg for the first time i have never failed it so i ran with that as a 1 rep max

Deadlifts

180kg x 5
210kg x 5
240kg x 5

This is when i asked what next and Kelvin wanted to hit 270 for a double which he did so i decided to take it for a ride and was rather surprised that 3 was comfy considering i have not handled anything near it in a long time. Floor speed could of been better but everything else felt pretty comfy i could of done 4 maybe pushed for a hard 5th so i am pretty happy that the strength is coming back.

Block Pause Deadlift DOH Controlled Negative

Kelvin introduced me to an exercise he used for grip and after doing 2 sets at 130kg for 10 my hands where shot!

Power Rows

120kg x 5
140kg x 5
160kg x 4
100kg x 20

1 Arm Rows

60kg 3 sets of 5

Have Fun

Sometimes you need to stop what your doing, stop worrying about if a lift will carry over, ignore that its not part of the program and just have fun. The best, most scientific programs around will not produce the results you want if you are not enjoying it.

You need to remember why you train, and it should be because you enjoy it. It should be a release from everything life has to throw at you and something you look forward too, if you don't enjoy your training you will  most likely not be putting in the same amount of effort, start missing sessions and limit your results.

Have fun, try new things you have never done before, variety is the spice of life.

This session had no reason, i had no idea what i was going to do other than having a bonus session. Turned up to the gym, looked around and decided i was going to try a few things and have fun which was a success!

The Re Warm

Yesterdays session was a write off...... until i did something i rarely ever do. I went up to the weight that i had planned (105kg) strict log press. By the time i got to the weight, warming up as normal i was in pain and i grinded out 1 rep on 105kg where 3 should be been comfy, got angrier and tried again on two different sets getting 1 each time. Dropped it right back down to 65 then worked my way back up 75,85,95 by the time i got back to 105 the shoulder felt fine and i ended up with 2 sets of 3 reps. Morale of the story is do not write off a session straight away even when things feel bad they may not be as bad as they seem.

Log Press Strict (working sets)

105kg x 1
105kg x 1
105kg x 1
105kg x 3
105kg x 3
85kg 3 x 8

Axle Clean Each Rep  and Strict Press

90kg x 10 (PB)
100kg 4x5 (PB)

#BeastMode Yuri Belkin

Yuri Belkin is a beast. His technique is insanely good (no surprise hes russian) and he has just recently broke the all time all federation world record total in the 100kg weight class at Boss of Bosses 3 beating off the two best in the 100kg class Kevin Oak and Dan Green. This brings the Total record in the 100kg class too a staggering 994kg. Had Belkin hit his last deadlift he would of broken the 1000kg barrier!

Not only at Boss of Bosses but time and time again hes shown how good he is especially in the deadlift. In Russia at the WRPF Pro Cup (Moscow) on June 5, 2016 Yuri Deadlifted well over 4x bodyweight! 418kg @ 101.5kg. Very close to the GOAT Ed Coan's all time record in the 100kg class of 409kg!

If anybody can break records that have been around as long as Ed Coan's it is this man! Keep your eyes on him and see what crazy feats he can do in the 100-110kg weight classes!, follow him on social media below.
